Cambodia

We flew to Cambodia for a few days. We had to point out all of the Christmas trees just for Drake. The one on the left is made out of "Cambodian made" baskets.

One of the really cool temples with steeples. How many steeples can you see?

Big Buddha inside.

Posing for the picture.

About to crash.

Guy with the snake.

                                         Up close.

Grahm and mom with their feet being eaten off.

In the maze of the mess.

We saw a show with acrobats (from poor families) and now they can do cool stuff.

The house that we rented for the stay.

The tuk-tuk for the day, outside of the of the house that we rented.

Angkor Wat.

Us burning to a crisp.

The "center of the universe."

In Angkor Wat.

Drake wanted some food and watched right in front of her while she made it.

Bayon Temple

A cool temple.

Mom posing for a picture.

The heads to welcome everybody.

Very tired boys.

Elephant World/Christmas

Elephant World (Thailand):

Our Christmas holiday was enjoyed in Bangkok, Thailand. On Christmas day, we decided to go to  EW (Elephant World), a place where we serve the elephants. We had hired a car company to be transportation through out the holiday, so we drove to EW (~3 hrs north of Bangkok). On the way, we watched the original "Miracle on 34th Street", and enjoyed banana, chocolate, and strawberry milk. Halfway there Grahm decided to hurl and we had a smelly car for the rest of the way. When we arrived to EW, we received free elephant style water bottle holders, and were able to pet and feed elephants that were outside the gates.

After our arrival, we were lead to the "main/mess hall" building. We put our stuff in a locker and then started with the day's activities. Throughout the day, we did multiple activities of service for the elephants, such as feeding, bathing, sorting out food, more feeding, and more feeding.

Below is Amber with the 75 year old Amber (Aum Pan)

Elephants have teeth under some layer of skin.

We got to go into the river and dodged elephant nuggets while scrubbing the sides of the elephants.

We learned many cool facts and tips about elephants while doing each different activity. One such fact was what type of food elephants like to eat, while we washed the watermelons we were about to feed them later on in the day. We got to make some sticky rice with unripe banana and pumpkins. We stirred everything with giant spoons over a fire.

We had Thai food for all of our meals. That included a lot of spice with curries and rice and plenty of fruit on the side.

EW was the home not only to elephants, but also to dogs and cattle. There were dogs everywhere at the main building and there was one dog who had his back legs broken, so he had to drag himself everywhere.

Towards the night time, we watched a elephant documentary about a village who used elephants in everyday life. Then we slept in a cabin that was made for tourists who were staying overnight at EW. There other cabins too, but there were used by temporary staff and other tourists.

This Elephant was one of the first elephants at EW. We fed this elephant with the sticky rice balls that we made.

The next morning Dad, Grahm, and I woke up very early and went on a hike with others up a mountain, where the elephants go up to rest for the night. After the hike and breakfast, we continued with feeding and bathing. We also floated down the river for a good hour, wearing life vests in 'diaper' style. After lunch and our last time feeding of the elephants we packed up and left the place having to say goodbye to our new friends.  Something funny about this trip is that now every time somebody at home raises their voice, Drake reminds us all "don't scare the elephants!"

Holidays

I am still puzzling over the interesting fact that here in China my child can participate in a school Christmas program celebrating Christ in Christmas.  Grahm was an angel, the smug angel.  The angels were in charge of gathering children from different countries so they could share how their country celebrated Christ in Christmas.  They did a great job and Grahm thoroughly enjoyed himself.

He was way excited his part included a microphone head set.

To help get in the Christmas spirit, we checked out a few places with Christmas lights.  Our favorite spot was the Christmas tree at the Hilton Hotel complete with trains.  The boys were excited to see a train sporting an advertisement for their school.

Once we got Duncan back we took off to Thailand and Cambodia for Christmas.  We spent the big day bathing, feeding, and playing with elephants (to be included in our next post). Our traditional Christmas activities were officially celebrated on the 30th after our return. And yes, the Jolly Red Elf made his visit to us in Beijing while we were away. Whew.

For New Years, we spent the Eve playing games and eating treats the boys made. Our make shift instruments came out as soon as the bell tolled 0:00.

Home Again Home Again, Jiggity Jig

He is home!!!!!  After 6 1/2 months of illness, 2 medevacs, losing the ability to walk, double vision and blindness in one eye, (lost count) doctor appointments, (again too many to count) blood pulls and IVs, 1 IVIG, 6+ MRIs, 2 spinal taps, 3 Physical Therapy sessions, 15 days in 2 different hospitals, in 2 different countries, 4 months of medication, 3 months living with Grandma, 1 month waiting for clearance, 6 flights (2 of which he flew solo, including the one back home). and millions of prayers and fasts he has made it home!!!!

The official diagnosis. . . unknown.

We made it through this time due to our HUGE support system!  Friends, family, acquaintances, and even perfect strangers went out of their way to provide help, information, doughnuts, moral support, places to stay, food to eat, love, hugs, phone calls, blessings, rides, cars, visits (I even had a cousin who flew in from Australia to visit for a few hours before flying back home again!) and gifts.  If you are reading this I am talking about you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ were aware of us and sent angels our way.  It is due to their mercy and love that Duncan has been able to fully recover.

The other boys find it hard to be sympathetic as they were stuck here at home going to school.  We tell them if they are willing to go through the same treatment then maybe we'll consider letting them have the same experience.
Thank you!!!  Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

Christmas Is A Coming . . .

Thanksgiving in China was spent like any other day.  Lane had work off, but the boys went to school like any other day.  We had a nice dinner Thanksgiving style, although with chicken instead of turkey.  We usually have ham but since we had plenty of chicken on hand . . .

Our Christmas parties have already come and gone.  Due to heavy travel plans, parties are scheduled early.  Which also means they hit the same day.  No complaining was heard for the back to back holiday celebrations.

Out And About

Often we finding our selves jumping on a bike or going for a walk, often last minute to see tucked away corners of Beijing.  Drake in front of the Bell Tower.

Zoo

Temple of Heaven

Forbidden City

Qianmen Street

One day while biking to a new found market we passed this guy and asked Drake, "what is that?"  Fully expecting him to say Shi zi or lion we were surprised by his "reindeer" answer.  Can't blame him with at least five different animals represented.
